Public Invited to Enjoy Historic Highway Route 80 Event...

The public is being invited to participate in the 3rd annual drive along Historic Highway 80 taking place on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 9:00am – 2:30pm with prizes and awards being provided at Viejas at 3:00pm. Viejas is also hosting it’s annual BBQ Challenge Cookout where guests will be able to enjoy delicious BBQ meals for a very nominal price.

Get set for a fun passport adventure ride from the East and West.  See classic cars and enter for the fun as we stop in communities all along the route 80 including Downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, El Cajon Boulevard, La Mesa, El Cajon, Alpine, and Viejas Casino.

In conjunction with the day’s events at Viejas the following activities will be offered: Historic Highway 80 Display and prizes, Smokn’ in the Park BBQ, Alpine Festival of Beers, and Alpine Art Show.

The Historic Highway 80 Corporation is a non-profit 501-C3 organization organizing the event and this event is supported by businesses in the communities along Highway 80.  If you are interested in supporting the effort to build awareness of this historic route and would like to help participate with this annual event for the community please contact us.

“Public Celebration Recognizes Historic State Highway Route 80 Designation”

Saturday, October 21st 2006 was a day of numerous ribbon cutting events offered free to the public throughout the day at numerous San Diego Communities, including public celebrations, art exhibits, car caravan, and special classic car show exhibits available along Historic Highway Route 80.

The State of California has officially recognized State Highway Route 80 as a historic road worthy of visitation and exploration for potential visitors.  To officially launch the public promotional and marketing campaigns set to improve awareness about this important part of our California roadway history, the Historic Highway 80 Corporation has worked with community groups to organize a major event for Saturday, October 21st to officially open the route for the public to enjoy this historic roadway.  New signage has been installed along the route within the cities of La Mesa, El Cajon, and the County of San Diego with City of San Diego signage soon to come.  Imperial Valley is also installing new signage to mark the route for future visitors to follow.  Participants and guest will an opportunity to see the new historic signs as they journey along the Route 80 during the day’s celebrations.

The kickoff celebration will begin at Seaport Village at the entrance to North Embarcadero Park for the first Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and official opening of Historic Highway Route 80 at 7:00 am.  Public Dignitaries including State Assemblyman, Jay La Seur will be the honorary official for the first ribbon cutting ceremony; he is the primary author of the State Resolution that passed the State Assembly and Senate to officially recognize the historic route.  A special performance of the Highway 80 Song will be performed by a live group and classic cars will begin the caravan that will retrace the Route 80, with additional consecutive stops for ribbon cutting ceremonies all the way to the Viejas Classic Car Show celebration during the day.

The second event will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to take place at 9:00 am in front of the San Diego Automotive Museum, in Balboa Park.  There will be numerous classic cars on display and a new museum exhibit will be featured depicting the Highway 80 “Plank Road” which was part of the roadway in the Imperial Valley desert. Public admission to the museum will be free from 9:00 am until 11:00 am in celebration of the opening of route 80, which follows adjacent Park Boulevard to El Cajon Boulevard.

At the historic Lafayette Hotel on El Cajon Boulevard a third ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 9:45 am.  There will be refreshments for the classic car caravan and dignitaries along with entertainment to mark the occasion.

The Viejas event is the “2nd Annual Viejas Rods & Rides” car show. From 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.  Featuring celebrities: Candy Clark & Bo Hopkins – Stars of the Classic Movie “American Graffiti”, there will be prizes, trophies and lots of fun for the public to enjoy.  A special BBQ celebration at the Viejas Outlet Shopping Center and a special Native American ribbon cutting ceremony will be the 8th opening of the highway and will take place on Willow Road in front of the casino at 1:00 pm. Viejas Casino is one of the official signature sponsors of this kickoff celebration.

The official kickoff for the Historic Highway Route 80 celebration is open to the public at no cost.  The media and public are invited to come out and enjoy the festivities in any one of or all of the communities that will be celebrating the recognition of this fascinating road from our past, Historic Highway Route 80.  

The official sponsors in support of the opening celebration include the San Diego Automotive Museum, Viejas Casino, Sycuan Casino, the Automobile Club of Southern California and the County of San Diego, Cities of La Mesa, El Cajon and City of San Diego.  El Centro. Holtville and the County of Imperial Valley have also supported the effort to make Highway Route 80 an official landmark and route for future visitors to discover and enjoy and have helped to organize this sure to be exciting kickoff celebration event.
